Suwanee Real Estate Information
Until very recently a small agricultural community, Suwanee had its beginnings as an Indian village and later served as a stop along the railroad. The Indian village was located in the area where Suwanee Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River. This location is southwest of downtown about three miles.
There are at least possible histories of the town name. The first says that Suwanee in the Native American tongue means “echo.” The other says the name was a mispronunciation of the word “Shawnee.” A post office was built in 1838 and given the name Suwanee. Suwanee’s development as a town was tied to the growth of transportation. In 1871 the Suwanee depot and Southern Railroad were built in this area. Suwanee developed around the depot.
Suwanee had 39 homes in 1880 and a population of 216. By 1923 there were 12 stores, a feed mill, a cotton gin, two auto repair shops, a feed mill, a coffin factory, two blacksmith shops, a livery stable, a planning mill, and a grist mill. The town’s economy was largely built on cotton. Although it continued to be a farming based community until the 1970’s, Suwanee was incorporated in 1949.
The building of Interstate 85 during the 1970’s allowed for more development and easier access to Atlanta. The population of Suwanee today is over 16,000. Suwanee is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. In Atlanta there is plenty of shopping and a variety of activities to keep anyone busy. Atlanta offers world class performing arts and artist.
There are six major league professional sports teams in Atlanta. The Interstate highway system gives access to the rest of the nation both north and south as well as east and west. Air travel is offered thorough the Atlanta Airport which has the distinction of being the busiest airport in the nation. More flights and passengers pass through the Atlanta Airport on a daily basis than any other airport in the U.S. This does not mean trouble for the traveler though, as this airport is well equipped for the crowds.
