Lake Lanier Real Estate Information

Lake Sidney Lanier is a man made lake in northern Georgia named for the poet, Sidney Lanier. In 1956, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers closed Buford Dam and began filling Lake Lanier with the waters of The Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. Lake Lanier has almost 700 miles of shoreline and corves 38,000 acres. The lake extends into four counties, all in Georgia.

Originally created for flood control to protect Atlanta from the flooding of the Chattahoochee, the lake supplies hydroelectric power and water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. Located at the base of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the lake has a beautiful aqua blue color most of the year. It is popular for boating, fishing and many other types of water sports.

Annually there are 7.5 million visitors to the lake. In addition to the water sports there is spectacular scenery to be observed at Lake Lanier. There are over 100 small islands in Lake Lanier. Surrounding the lake, there are 10 campgrounds, 10 marinas and numerous parks. In addition there are several parks that are run by various counties or city parks departments.

Most campgrounds are available with hookups. There are several exits from Georgia State Highway 400, the Hospitality Highway; a corridor of artisans, restaurants and shopping, that is well worth the drive. Interstate 985 also makes for an easy drive into Atlanta. In Atlanta you will find the amenities of any large city. Air transportation is made possible by the Atlanta Airport, North America’s busiest airport. This airport is a major hub for Delta Airlines and connections can be made worldwide from Atlanta. Atlanta is also home to six major sports teams, including the Atlanta Braves, made famous by cable’s Turner Broadcasting. A few miles down the road you will find Stone Mountain with its night time laser light show.
