Buford, Georgia is located in the northern part of the state and is only 25 minutes from Atlanta. For many years this town, which began as a train stop between Atlanta and Charlotte, was the largest city in Gwinnett County. It was very industrialized in its early years and became world known for its leather products. Leather was not the only thing produced in Buford during this time frame as many factories were located within the city.
Buford was home to the first bank in Gwinnett County. Buford has many historic buildings and homes, among which is the Bona Allen Mansion. This picturesque estate features an elegant European style mansion built by the Allen family in 1911. Today the estate is available for weddings and special events. Mr. Allen was owner of the tannery in town and also owned the area’s semi-pro baseball team, appropriately called the shoemakers.
Today Buford is only minutes from Lake Sidney Lanier. Lake Lanier was constructed by the Corps of Engineers in 1950 and is known for its beautiful aqua blue water. The lake has almost 700 miles of shore line and host 7.5 million visitor on an annual basis. Lake Lanier offers fishing, boating, waterskiing and swimming opportunities.
Buford is only minutes away from downtown Atlanta with access by Interstate 985. Home of the world famous Atlanta Braves, as well as five other professional sports teams, Atlanta offers all the amenities you would expect to find in a metropolitan area. Air travelers will have little trouble finding flights into or out of the Atlanta airport. It has held the distinction of having the most of any airport in the United States for seven years.
